Medical Abortion

Serious asian young womanRU-486 Medical Abortion

Also known as the “Abortion Pill”, Mifepristone is a safe alternative to a surgical abortion.  A patient visits our office to receive the medication and then completes the abortion procedure in the comfort and privacy of her own home.  Currently in the United States, approximately 35% of all procedures performed prior to nine weeks gestation use this method of pregnancy termination.

First the initial paperwork, ultrasound, lab work, and a medical history and physical examination are done.  Then instructions and information are given before administering the “Abortion Pill”.  The actual abortion process begins before the patient leaves the office. During the next 24 to 36 hours, four small Cytotec tablets are taken by mouth between the cheek and gums, which then causes the procedure to be completed at home.

A follow-up visit is absolutely necessary at 1 to 2 weeks following the procedure to confirm the success of the pregnancy termination.

This method is extremely safe: a serious infection rate of less than 1 in 1,000 patients (0.1%), with only 1 in 100,000 (0.001%) deaths from serious infection.  And it is extremely effective with a success rate of nearly 95%.  Only 2-3% of patients require any further follow-up or intervention following an incomplete or failed medical abortion.

Methotrexate Medical Abortion

Methotrexate is a very effective and safe for very early pregnancy termination.  It can be used up to seven weeks of pregnancy and is taken by mouth or by an injection as decided by your doctor.  Methotrexate interferes with the growth of the placenta, which allows it to separate from the lining of the uterus.

After the initial paperwork, ultrasound, lab work, and a medical history and physical examination, instructions and information are given before administering the Methotrexate.  The actual abortion process begins before the patient leaves the office.  During the next 48 to 72 hours, four small Cytotec tablets are taken by mouth between the cheek and gums, which then causes the procedure to be completed at home.

A follow-up visit is absolutely necessary at 1 to 2 weeks following the procedure to confirm the success of the pregnancy termination.  A fetus may not develop normally after exposure to methotrexate or misoprostol.  Methotrexate is also used for treatment of an ectopic pregnancy.  A medical abortion with injected methotrexate and misoprostol when completed before seven weeks, is effective in 92 to 96 out of 100 cases.
